What causes sleep apnea?

Sleep apnea occurs when the body has difficulty breathing during sleep. There could be multiple causes for the disruption of sleep, but in a vast majority of cases, sleep apnea is obstructive. Obstructive sleep apnea results from excess soft tissue in the throat and mouth blocking the airway. Individuals with excess weight, enlarged tonsils, or narrow throat ways are at high risk of experiencing sleep apnea symptoms due to tissues surrounding the airway.

What are the types of sleep apnea?

There are three types of sleep apnea: central sleep apnea, complex sleep apnea, and obstructive sleep apnea. Obstructive sleep apnea is the most common form of sleep apnea caused by blockage of the airways. The blockage of the airways results in fragmented sleep as the brain partially awakens the sleeper to gasp for air. Fortunately, obstructive sleep apnea treatment can manage unpleasant sleep apnea symptoms.

Can sleep apnea be cured?

Snoring, one of the common signs of sleep apnea, can happen once in a while. But in the case where it happens every night, it might be a sign of something like the need for sleep apnea treatment. Sleep apnea cannot be completely cured, but it can be managed with the help of professionals. Sleep apnea devices like sleep apnea appliances or airway machines are effective options to provide relief from sleep apnea symptoms, and we encourage finding a sleep apnea treatment as soon as possible.
