How long does orthodontic treatment take?

The length of orthodontic treatment typically depends on your specific needs and the severity of the alignment or bite issues. Some patients with minor spacing or crowding may complete treatment in as little as 6–12 months, while more complex cases can take 18–24 months.

During your consultation, we’ll evaluate your teeth and bite using digital imaging and create a personalized timeline. Both Invisalign and braces work by gradually shifting teeth into their proper positions, and consistent wear (for Invisalign) or regular adjustments (for braces) help keep your treatment on track.

Does orthodontic treatment hurt?

Orthodontic treatment is not typically painful, but you may experience mild soreness or pressure when starting Invisalign, after switching to a new set of aligners, or following adjustments with braces. This is a normal sign that your teeth are moving as planned.

Most patients describe the sensation as temporary discomfort that fades within a few days. Over-the-counter pain relievers and soft foods can help during these adjustment periods. Invisalign trays are smooth and comfortable, while today’s braces are smaller and more comfortable than ever before.

What’s the ideal age for orthodontic treatment?

Orthodontic treatment can be effective at nearly any age. While many children are evaluated around age 7 to monitor jaw development and tooth alignment, teens and adults make up a large portion of orthodontic patients today.

Adults often prefer Invisalign for its discreet appearance, while braces remain an excellent option for children, teens, and adults with more complex alignment or bite concerns. No matter your age, it’s never too late to improve your smile and oral health through orthodontic care!

Do I need to go to an orthodontic practice for Invisalign?

High Point Dentistry has in-house orthodontists at select locations who provide Invisalign and braces in-office. This means you can receive comprehensive dental and orthodontic care in one convenient location from a team that already knows your smile. Our in-house orthodontic specialists work closely with our dental team to ensure your treatment is seamless, efficient, and tailored to your needs.

If your case requires very rare or complex tooth movement, we may recommend seeking treatment from another specialist, but virtually all routine orthodontic cases can be handled in-office. High Point Dentistry makes it convenient for your family to get the care you need in a familiar setting—no need for extra appointments or referrals!
