7 Dental Tips for National Dental Hygiene Month
October 17, 2022 6:09 pmHalloween isn’t the only notable thing about October. It’s also National Dental Hygiene Month! Here are seven tips for improving your oral hygiene routine:
1. Brush for Two Minutes Each Time
Even people who brush twice a day don’t always pay attention to how long they’re brushing. If you’re not brushing long enough, you’re most likely missing areas and leaving plaque on your teeth! Brush for at least two minutes.
2. Brush Your Tongue
Lots of bacteria stick to your tongue, so it’s important to clean it while you’re brushing your teeth. Most people don’t need a special tool; simply brush it well with a soft-bristled toothbrush.
3. Replace Your Toothbrush When It Frays
When the bristles on your toothbrush fray or get damaged, they don’t clean your teeth as well. Fraying usually begins after a few months, but your brush may last longer. Replace it as soon as you notice fraying.
4. Floss Every Day
Many people neglect to floss, which can be very damaging to their oral health because gum disease is the number one cause of tooth loss in adults. If you want to improve your dental hygiene and you don’t currently floss regularly, start flossing!
5. Stay Hydrated
Saliva helps rinse food particles and plaque off your teeth, so if your mouth is frequently dry, your risk for tooth decay increases. Be sure to drink enough water during the day.
6. Consider Using a Mouthwash
Mouthwash can be an excellent addition to your normal oral hygiene routine. Alcohol-free kinds are usually better since alcohol dries out your mouth. Ask us about what brands we recommend.
7. Get a Professional Cleaning Every Six Months
No matter how good your dental hygiene routine is at home; you should still visit the dentist twice a year for professional cleanings and exams. We’ll clean your teeth and check for signs of tooth decay, gum disease, and oral cancer.
